Metal industry
Currently the metal industry is the major consumer of oxygen. Thus, the core sector of steelmaking — converter steelmaking process — is associated with application of oxygen.
Oxygen is applied in the processes:
- Cast-iron and steel production (removal of excess carbon)
- Converter steelmaking
- Electric furnace steelmaking
- Oxygen blast in oxygen blast in blast furnaces
- Production of ferrous-based alloys
- Smelting of nickel, zinc, zirconium and other non-ferrous metals
- Faster driving of crude metal roasting processes in non-ferrous metallurgy
- Iron forward recovery
Applications of nitrogen
Nitrogen is applied as a blanket media protecting production processes against exposure to the air and its oxidizing components (moisture, oxygen, carbon dioxide).
Among others, it is applied in the following processes:
- Generation of the blanket media in vacuum degasification of liquid melts
- Generation of inert environment for continuous steel casting
- Refining processes in aluminium smelting
